A brief history of Taormina
Founded in the 4th century BC by the Greeks and later ruled by the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, Taormina has a rich history that is perceptible throughout the city.
Its origins date back to the 4th century BC, when the Greeks founded Tauromenion, a settlement that soon became a vital crossroads between East and West.
The most iconic monument in the city is the Ancient Theatre, a masterpiece of Greco-Roman engineering that continues to host international events, concerts and performances today, set against the splendid natural backdrop of Mount Etna and the sea.
During its history, the city became a favourite stop on the Grand Tour, attracting figures such as Goethe, Wagner, D.H. Lawrence and Truman Capote.
Taormina has maintained this cultural and cosmopolitan character intact, while adapting to the tastes, habits and requirements of today’s visitors.
