Founded in the 4th century BC by the Greeks and later ruled by the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, Taormina has a rich history that is perceptible throughout the city.
Its origins date back to the 4th century BC, when the Greeks founded Tauromenion, a settlement that soon became a vital crossroads between East and West.
The most iconic monument in the city is the Ancient Theatre, a masterpiece of Greco-Roman engineering that continues to host international events, concerts and performances today, set against the splendid natural backdrop of Mount Etna and the sea.
During its history, the city became a favourite stop on the Grand Tour, attracting figures such as Goethe, Wagner, D.H. Lawrence and Truman Capote.
Taormina has maintained this cultural and cosmopolitan character intact, while adapting to the tastes, habits and requirements of today’s visitors.
Just as a pearl is formed slowly in the depths of the sea, Taormina has become a rare and precious treasure of the Ionian through the centuries, ready to captivate every visitor.
Famously described as the Pearl of the Ionian, the name celebrates the city’s beauty, elegance and charm. Taormina is known for its spectacular, spellbinding setting, suspended between the sky and the sea. The turquoise waters that lap the beaches, the scent of the fragrant citrus and jasmine, the understated beauty of the historic buildings and the lively squares come together to create a unique, inimitable atmosphere.
Taormina is one of the most glamorous destinations in the Mediterranean, extending a warm welcome to visitors all year round, with its beaches, splendid sea, rich historical heritage and superb tourist facilities.
