The connection between women and motherhood is one of constant transformation. In art, the relationship between women, beauty and motherhood has evolved over time: from sacred and idealised figures, we have moved towards increasingly realistic and intimate depictions, culminating in a reflection on the role of the mother in contemporary society.
For centuries, in Western art, the image of the mother was almost exclusively synonymous with the figure of the Madonna. Works such as the ‘Madonna and Child’ celebrated a pure, otherworldly beauty, a symbol of love and divine purity. Women were seen not only as mothers, but also as a conduit to the divine.
Over time, artists began to explore motherhood as an earthly and real experience, made up of emotions, relationships, fragility and transformations.
This exhibition forms part of this evolutionary journey in the representation of women, presenting different interpretations of women and motherhood, spanning the aesthetic dimension, personal experience and universal values.
